About Our Club
Melton Old Grammarians Badminton Club is one with a long tradition having been founded almost 80 years ago. For us it is not solely about competitive badminton as we continually seek to achieve the correct balance between enjoyable club nights and a good standard of team player. Our culture is one of collectivity and friendship whilst at the same time providing a great home for players who enjoy the competitive side of the sport.
In addition to our regular club nights at Long Field Academy on a Monday we offer extensive junior coaching over the winter months and have an active social side with a number of non badminton events during the season. Our home team matches are held on a Thursday night and for both club nights and matches we use feather shuttles.
Our season generally starts at the beginning of September and runs through to the end of April. Junior coaching will normally start in early October and run through to Christmas before resuming again in February.
Our regular base is the Sports Hall at
Long Field Academy
The New Season is due to starts on November 2021 and provided social distancing rules permitting.
Our main club nights are Monday and Wednesday at Long Field Academy in Melton between 8pm and 10pm. Club nights generally run from the first Monday in September each year through to Christmas and then resume in early January through to the end of April.
Junior and Intermediate coaching generally starts in early October and is held before the main club night.
Juniors are coached between 6pm and 7pm and intermediates between 7pm and 8pm. Once a certain standard is reached they can then participate in the main club night.
We use feather shuttles at club night. For further details re club nights ring our club secretary on

Over recent years the development of strong junior and intermediate sections has been a priority for Melton Old Grammarians Badminton Club (OGs) building on its historic traditions of developing the sport across the Melton area. In addition to encouraging healthy attendances at the junior and intermediate coaching sessions held at Long Field Academy on a Monday night the club takes the sport into local schools. Typically the club reaches in excess of 300 students each year at various schools across the Melton area. Any students seeking to develop their skills further can then feed into the junior and intermediate coaching at OGs club nights.
The club has two fully qualified coaches, Linda Hallam and Trevor Sanders, who devote countless hours to ensure the next generation of badminton players are well coached in every aspect of the game. We also have additional coaching resource to call upon as our development programme continues. As well as teaching the core skills of the game we are keen to see both juniors and intermediates develop leadership qualities where appropriate.
In the past the club has benefitted from tremendous backing by both Badminton England and Leicester-shire and Rutland Sport who recognise that with children now having a wide choice of activity available to them badminton has to compete for their attention. Likewise Clare Marlow, School Sports Development Manager for Melton schools has been instrumental in helping us develop a good working relationship with local schools.
We are now in the fortunate position of being able to offer local students a seamless transition from junior level through to adult badminton at our Long Field base where both the coaching and playing conditions are of a very high standard. Junior coaching is held from early October each season on a Monday night at Long Field from 6pm to 7pm followed by intermediate coaching from 7pm to 8pm. Parents can rest assured their children will be well coached and looked after in the friendly atmosphere OGs is well known for.
Any parents or children seeking further details of the coaching available at Old Grammarians should in the first instance contact one of our club coaches -
